Mercedes-Benz EQXX smashes through another EV range record
Mercedes-Benz has revealed more test data from driving its EQXX Concept on the Arabian Peninsula. The prototype EV has demonstrated all-time-best power efficiency by covering 1,010 km (627.6 miles) with air conditioner and other creature comforts on.
You may remember that the EQXX had shown even better results before, but those earlier attempts prioritized driving range over everything else. The latest run took place in severe weather conditions, making the power economy especially impressive.
The car made a trip from the company’s flagship showroom in Riyad, Saudi Arabia to a branch office in Dubai, UAE. It took 14 hours and 42 minutes for two crews to travel the 1,010-kilometer distance at an average speed of 79.4 km/h (49.3 mph). The route included high-traffic urban areas and lengthy stretches of scorching desert road. Crossing the border between the two countries and changing the crew took two hours, during which the car stood idle.
The heat came to +34 ºC (+93 ºF), forcing both teams involved in the experiment to keep the air conditioner running, but Mercedes claims it has barely affected the range at all. Solar panels on the roof have reportedly supplied around 24 km (15 miles) of free range, too. When it arrived in Dubai, the on-board software reckoned the remaining charge was still good for 309 km (192 miles) or so.
The implication is that the innovative EV was able to get 100 kilometers of range from just 7.4 kilowatt-hours of battery power. That’s difficult to translate into ICE terms, but the company says you can think of it as burning through 900 milliliters of gas per 100 kilometers, for a fuel economy of 261.4 miles per U.S. gallon.
