2nd-gen Beijing BJ30 debuts in China
BAIC Group has officially unveiled the second generation of its Beijing BJ30 SUV. The model has completely changed on the outside, got larger and received a new hybrid powertrain. According to AutoHome, it will go on sale during the Beijing Auto Show with the entry-level price of 120,000 Yuan.
The Beijing BJ30 is being advertised as a “light off-roader” with AWD included in the standard spec. This choice of words is interesting, because the “light” SUV features a sturdy body-on-frame design and benefits from per-wheel suspension. The photos recently made at a dedicated event in China let us take a closer look at it from the outside and the inside.
The car is 4,730 mm long, 1,910 mm wide, 1,790 mm tall and has 2,820 mm between the axles. Compared to the first generation –which was front-wheel-drive only – it is 225 mm (8.8 in) longer with 5.7 inches of extra space between the axles. The ground clearance amounts to 215 mm (8.4 in), and the approach/departure angles make 25 and 30 degrees, respectively.
The driver’s cockpit consists of a 10.25-inch digital dash cluster and a 14.6-inch standalone infotainment display powered by a Qualcomm 8155 chipset. The base trim level already includes a range of electronic aids summing up to Level 2+ self-driving capabilities. With all seats folded down, you can turn the SUV into a sleeping area for two.
The powertrain is called Magic Core and mates a 1.5-liter, Atkinson-cycle turbo engine with two electric motors. The engine has a stated thermal efficiency of 41% and outputs 158 PS (156 hp / 116 kW) along with up to 235 Nm (173 lb-ft) of torque. With both motors engaged, the combined output raises to 409 PS (403 hp / 301 kW) and 685 Nm (505 lb-ft) of torque. The SUV sprints 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in less than six seconds and gets more than 1,000 km (621 miles) of range out of a full gas tank.
The battery is small at 1.67 kWh and cannot be charged from external sources, so the new Beijing BJ30 is a mild hybrid.
According to the certification data from the Ministry of Industry and IT database, the company is apparently going to release another version of the SUV based on a 1.5-liter engine capable of 188 PS (185 hp / 138 kW). This one hasn’t been confirmed yet.
