No one bought this DTM-inspired Mercedes-Benz replica from the ‘90s
Collecting Cars Germany put an exclusive 1995 Mercedes-Benz C-Class up for sale several days ago that looked like an almost exact copy of the company’s DTM racecar of that era. Unfortunately, it never met the reserve and was delisted.
Starting with the exterior, an uncredited tuner endowed the C-Class with a DTM-inspired body kit including bulky bumpers at both ends, flared fenders and side skirts. A large rear wing and a sports exhaust system complement the look. The livery is a reference to the 1994 season of the Deutsche Tourenwagen Meisterschaft, back when the Mercedes team consisted of Bernd Schneider, Ellen Lohr and Klaus Ludwig. The latter won the championship.
Aside from the striking exterior, the C-Class wound up with a thoroughly redesigned chassis featuring new strut braces and shocks, as well as 19-inch multi-piece wheels. In contrast, the cabin remained largely stock except for a roll cage and fresh leather/Alcantara trim.
The same goes for the engine, which corresponds to the 1995 C280 spec. It is a 2.8-liter non-turbo flat-six unit sending roughly 190 PS (187 hp / 140 kW) to the wheels through a four-speed automatic transmission.
Aside from its venerable age, the mileage of the car could also explain the lack of interest from buyers. With 218,000 km (135,000 miles) under the hood, it is hardly a sensible investment unless you are willing to spend much more on repairs.
